The Clinical Counselor provides a full-range of individual and group psychological services to students, as well as consultation to faculty and staff who represent a wide range of multicultural backgrounds, presenting complex psychosocial, personal, and family issues. Responsibilities include a significant focus on coordinating services for students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (PoC). This candidate is expected to work collaboratively within CAPS, with other offices on campus, and with students themselves to develop services designed to best meet the needs of the university’s Black student community. As with all CAPS staff, this counselor will also operate as a generalist who provides a full-range of services to the entire student body.
Essential job functions
- Provision of brief individual, group, marital, and couples counseling (using time-limited treatment models);
- Outreach and consultation services to the University community, particularly for students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or PoC;
- Coordination of services for students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (PoC);
- Coordinate and track referrals to on-campus and local community health care and welfare resources;
- Provide crisis intervention;
- Provide clinical supervision to trainees of The Peggy H. Smith Counseling Clinic, a graduate training clinic staffed by graduate students; Involvement with the training program also involves co-facilitating outreach activities, workshops, and groups with all level of trainees; and providing training and educational seminars for all levels of trainees.
- Perform additional professional services as individual skills, interests and agency needs indicate;
- Willingness and availability to work evenings and weekend hours for campus outreach events or emergency/campus crisis/disaster situations.
- Demonstrated experience and clinical effectiveness in multicultural counseling approaches with ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and collaborations within and outside the department.
- Demonstrated ability to provide effective consultation regarding a variety of psychological issues.
- Strong clinical assessment skills.
- Strong crisis/suicide intervention experience and critical incident debriefing capabilities.
- Extensive experience making discerning judgments regarding complex legal and ethical issues.
Minimum qualifications typically required include possession of an appropriate terminal degree, e.g., a Doctorate in behavioral sciences, counseling, psychology or a specific related academic field or a California license as a Psychologist or be eligible to sit for licensure by the anticipated start date.
- 2+ years of post-licensure clinical experience
- Post graduate clinical experience in a university setting
- Experience working in a multicultural urban setting
- Experience in the provision of clinical services to students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or PoC
- Experience in the provision of outreach and consultation services to the university community, particularly for students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or PoC
- Experience and clinical effectiveness in multicultural counseling approaches with ethnically and culturally diverse clients and communities
- Knowledge and experience working with clinical issues common in a university setting (e.g. substance abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, conflict resolution, individual/group conflict resolution, trauma debriefing, etc.)
- Clinical skills and experience in time-limited, short-term approaches, with a broad range of complex personal and interpersonal issues
- Ability to provide effective consultation regarding a variety of psychological incident debriefing capabilities
- Experience in working with immigrant and international student populations
- Proficiency in a second language
Position Details, Salary and Benefits
- Full-time (40 hours per week) position.
- Start date: December 2020 until June 30, 2021.
- Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,500.00 to $6,630.00 per month ($78,000.00 to $79,560.00 annually).Salary is commensurate with experience.
