Counselor/Psychologist (Diversity and Inclusion Liaison) (33 views)

The Counseling & Testing Center (CTC) is seeking a dynamic, collaborative Counselor or Psychologist who is committed to promoting the mental health of historically marginalized identity groups.

If you are passionate about social justice, equity, and diversity, those values will be supported and promoted in this new position.

The CTC is a part of the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UWL), and is partnering with the Division of Diversity & Inclusion (D & I) to create a new clinical position who will also be a liaison with D & I. The Counselor/Psychologist will be under the general supervision of the Director of the CTC, with a secondary supervisory relationship with the Vice Chancellor for Diversity & Inclusion. The Counselor/Psychologist will function as a strong generalist conducting mental health assessments (intakes), urgent care (crisis) assessments, triage assessments and professional counseling services (including individual, couples, group) especially but not exclusively to students from historically marginalized populations, with a priority in addressing the mental health needs of students of color. Per needs determined in collaboration with the CTC Director and Vice Chancellor for Diversity & Inclusion, the clinician’s office may be primarily housed in an office location in close proximity to services for underrepresented students.

Other responsibilities include: developing and fostering relationships with those departments that serve underserved populations, as well as diversity-focused student organizations and groups; developing procedures with D & I campus partners to better respond to student mental health needs; providing consultation, outreach, and training to D & I offices/staff. The counselor/psychologist will also participate in staff meetings and trainings for both the CTC and D & I departments. Similar to all staff at the CTC, the clinician will work to integrate the ideals and goals of inclusive excellence in all aforementioned activities.

The successful candidate should:

  • have demonstrated skill and experience with treatment and programming for multicultural and traditionally underserved students (ethnic, LGBTQ, gender, etc.)
  • be committed to helping develop a new type of counseling service delivery on this campus
  • be well-versed and experienced in effectively assisting students coping with issues including (but not limited to) racial battle fatigue, bias incidences, and intersectionality
  • be a well-rounded professional, who works comfortably both individually and as a collaborator with administration, faculty and staff
  • be able to work autonomously and able to seek out consultation as needed
  • have proficiency in oral and written communication skills, public speaking, and leading group discussions

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Doctoral or Master’s degree in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, social work, or related field from an accredited program.
  • Licensed or license-eligible in the state of Wisconsin in a counseling profession.
  • Significant experience conducting brief therapy with emerging adults for a wide range of presenting concerns.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience with treating individuals from historically marginalized populations, with significant experience providing counseling and programmatic services to people of color.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of post-graduate clinical experience, with experience in a college counseling setting strongly preferred.
  • Experience and skill conducting outreach programming, presentations, and leading trainings and/or workshops relevant to college students from underrepresented populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with persons of diverse socio-economic, racial/ethnic, international, and LGBTQ backgrounds.
  • Specific training and knowledge of multicultural issues relevant to emerging adults, including but not limited to intersectionality.
  • Expertise in providing crisis intervention and collaborative work with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (e.g., Point and Click, Titanium, etc.).
  • Provision of services in languages in addition to English (Spanish and/or Hmong language preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and within interdisciplinary team settings.
  • Demonstrated experience functioning at a high level as a generalist counselor in a diverse setting.
