Position Summary

The Executive Director provides visionary direction and oversight for CaPS, a department within the Community Health and Well-Being unit of the division of Student Affairs, and serves as the mental health expert on campus. The Executive Director must be collaborative, creative, and an excellent communicator, and possess the talents and strengths to serve as a visible leader inside and outside of the department and the division. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Community Health and Well-Being, the Executive Director will have the opportunity to be a transformational leader envisioning and implementing a high-quality program that elevates the program and services for a diverse university community.

The importance of the mission of CaPS is underscored by the tremendous investment of University resources in its programs and staff in recent years. In addition, the work of the Task Force on the CMU Experience will offer the new leader meaningful opportunities to engage directly with those who are working to positively influence campus culture. The Executive Director will have the exciting opportunity to participate in the development and opening of a new Health and Wellness Center, anticipated to open in 2021, that connects CaPS and University Health Services with athletics and recreation programs in a visionary new complex that supports an active mind, body, and spirit.

The Executive Director will capitalize on the University’s forward progress in the area of health and well-being and share Carnegie Mellon’s core values of dedication, collaboration, and creativity, supporting a campus climate known for an intensive and engaged approach to human development, problem solving, and real-world impact. The Executive Director of CaPS will lead a multidisciplinary staff of 17 clinicians, 9 trainees, and 2 administrative professionals.

Primary Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Create a vision for mental health services including counseling, outreach, prevention and emergency response; define CaPS scope of practice.

• Develop and support processes that encourage integrated care efforts and reduce barriers to care across health and wellness programs at the University.

• Provide support and leadership regarding mental health in a diverse campus community.

• Ensure CaPS has adequate financial, staff, and technology resources for the delivery of highest possible level of care; provide strong stewardship for all resources.

• Establish departmental priorities in conjunction with the strategic vision of the Division of Student Affairs and the needs of the University community.

• Serve on the leadership team for the Division of Student Affairs and represent CaPS on University committees and projects.

Clinical Administration and Management

• Responsible for the supervision, recruitment, and evaluation of CaPS clinical and administrative staff; determine an organizational structure to support effective care and optimal functioning.

• Coordinate crisis intervention response processes and systems for CaPS, including providing clinical back-up and supervision for on-call clinicians. Provide supplemental clinical services for students in times of high demand and/or high case complexity.

• Develop and implement assessment protocols for CaPS that enable ongoing evaluation of services and student needs.

• Ensure high quality training and professional development of CaPS staff including continuing education to maintain licensure and to stay current in the field of collegiate mental health.

• Oversee the management of CaPS’ fiscal resources totaling approximately $2 million per year.

• Oversee the development and implementation of policies and procedures for CaPS operations.

• Seek and maintain accreditation of CaPS services through the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS).

• Ensure appropriate compliance with university rules and regulations, ethical guidelines, and legal requirements.

Consultation and Outreach

• Develop and maintain intentional collaborative relationships with colleagues in the community and professional associations pertaining to collegiate mental health service provision.

• Collaborate and consult with faculty, staff, and administration regarding mental health needs of students.

• Serve on the University’s case management and care team and participate in behavior intervention team assessments.

• Continue the expansion of outreach and education services regarding mental health and resiliency for the campus community in collaboration with other campus health and wellness partners.

• Maintain and grow visibility of CaPS through innovative marketing strategies and programming.

Minimum Qualifications

• Earned doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology or a related mental health field from an accredited institution of higher learning

• Currently licensed as a mental health practitioner; if not licensed in the State of Pennsylvania, must be license eligible

• Proven record of success and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including the ability to work well with a globally diverse student population

• At least seven years of clinical and administrative experience in a mental health setting; at least 3 years of this experience must be post-doctoral degree

• Demonstrated experience in the assessment of clinical services and needs of client populations

• Experience providing clinical supervision

• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Strong fiscal management skills and experience managing departmental funds

• Knowledge of current trends and best practices in collegiate mental health services

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working as a clinician in a college/university mental health center

• Experience in the development and/or implementation of accredited training programs for mental health professionals

• Demonstrated experience as a presenter in educational or outreach events
