Professor – Open Rank (28 views)

Job Summary

The Crown Institute at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty member in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor). We are seeking candidates with a demonstrated track record in the design, investigation, or dissemination of prevention or intervention programs for children, young people, or the adults who support them. We are interested in candidates who work collaboratively with settings in which innovations can achieve long-term sustainability, impact, and reach (e.g., schools and districts, after-school programs, community organizations, digital contexts, and platforms). We are particularly interested in research that centers on the life experiences and assets of diverse young people, including but not limited to diversity in terms of race and ethnicity, culture, long-term management of health obstacles, language, social class, (dis)ability, immigration status, gender identity, sexual orientation, intersectionality, and unique members of under-served and under-represented groups.

Who We Are

The Crown Institute’s research focuses on practices, programs, and policies that foster wellness among children and youth, families and caregivers, educators, and mental health and health providers. Scholars in multiple fields work together and in partnership with families, teachers, young people, and community members. The overall approach to the study of wellness in the Crown Institute foregrounds the importance of contextual factors and addresses disparities in access to health and education, such as those related to gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, language, or other forms of identity. Current areas of Crown Institute work include, but are not limited to, participatory action research, prevention and intervention research with young people, families, and educators including programs focused on mindfulness, compassion, and other contemplative and behavioral practices, and factors that support young people’s sense of belonging and agency in communities and schools. Future research may build upon existing areas of research in the Crown Institute or may explore new areas not currently represented. Our work seeks to recognize, value, and honor diverse approaches to wellness and the impact of racism and systems of oppression on social, emotional, and mental health. We acknowledge how traditional research and educational practices have perpetuated cycles of oppression and silenced voices; and core to our purpose as a research institute is re-imagining what research is through a lens of equity and justice and interdisciplinary, participatory, and community-based methods. Our leadership team brings together faculty from the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, the Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Education.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

This faculty member will be rostered in the Crown Institute, with a tenure home in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. Research expectations include growing an active program of research that develops projects in Colorado and seeking extramural funding. We also seek candidates who thrive in an interdisciplinary setting, bringing disciplinary expertise in combination with intellectual and cultural humility in working in relationships with other fields and community partners. Teaching responsibilities will include teaching interdisciplinary courses and core courses in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience undergraduate and graduate programs, including clinical supervision of graduate students, consistent with the area of expertise. Research mentoring and advising for undergraduate and graduate students also will be a key focus, and applicants should have experience with and commitment to centering justice and equity in their mentoring of students. Faculty will be expected to play an important leadership role in the Institute, including mentoring and supervising staff, conducting outreach that contributes to the ongoing scholarly community, engaging with campus partners, and raising the national profile of the Crown Institute.
