Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley’s University Health Services (UHS) is looking for a licensed psychologist to work with a team of talented professionals in their Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) unit, and to serve as a wellness coordinator for the UC Berkeley Multicultural Community Center and the Bridges Multicultural Resource Center.

University Health Services (UHS) located at the Tang Center, serves the UC Berkeley campus by providing fully accredited primary and urgent medical care, sports medicine, mental health, innovative health promotion and health insurance services to students, as well as a variety of faculty and staff health programs and services. UHS employs over 300 career and contract staff. CPS is a highly utilized, comprehensive, student counseling service that assists students with a wide range of concerns, including academic success, life management, career and life planning, crisis management, and emotional and psychiatric illness.. The Multicultural Community Center (MCC) located in the MLK Building on central campus, is a student-led space, which facilitates students’ involvement in multicultural-related education and cross-cultural community building. Responsibilities

A recently approved grant would support a new counseling office in the Multicultural Community Center in collaboration with bridges Multicultural Resource Center. We are searching for a psychologist who would be based in this satellite location in order to best serve first generation, low income, and underrepresented students.

Services would include counseling, drop-in hours for consultation, groups and other programming that is directed towards reaching students of color, LGBTQIA, and other underserved populations at UC as well as community building among Berkeley’s diverse student population. Preference for applicants who have social justice perspective. Work hours will include several evening hours per week and occasional weekend work, as many student programs are in the evening.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical:

• Performs diagnosis and psychotherapy on a full range of cases that are not pre-screened.

• Professionally responsible for the soundness and validity of recommendations and services, but is expected to seek advice from senior specialists on unusual or uniquely complex client responses or on problems outside their area of expertise.

• Gathers, analyzes, prepares, summarizes and monitors the status and progress of individual cases and projects

• Functions as a resource and may provide clinical supervision and oversight to lower level professional staff.

Community outreach:

• Develops specialized programs for underserved students.

• Presents psychoeducational workshops and wellness programming for students

• Provide drop-in consultation to students who are considering counseling

• Provides consultation to faculty and staff regarding student concern

• Lead discussions and multicultural dialogues

Required Qualifications

• Thorough knowledge and experience with providing time-limited counseling and psychotherapy, group counseling, evaluation, diagnosis and crisis intervention services.

* Experience with community-based interventions

* Advanced knowledge of multicultural and diversity issues and experience working with diverse populations

* Skills with program development and implementation

• Knowledge and experience with student development.

• Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, standards and ethics of professional conduct.

• Highly effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including public speaking and workshop delivery.

• Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with diverse student groups and staff members within Multicultural Center and at the Tang Center

• Ability to conduct complex analysis and develop and present recommendations and course of treatment.

• Knowledge of electronic/medical records systems.

* Must be computer literate.

Education/Training:

• Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-accredited program

*Current, valid license in California as a psychologist, or if licensed in another state, would need to be licensed within 6 months taking up residence in California.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting student activists and students in leadership roles

• Experience working with first generation, low income, underrepresented, underserved, queer and/or trans students of color

• Practical knowledge and experience with intersectional approaches to addressing student needs

• Student centered approach

• Experience creating community based wellness resources (posters, materials, etc.) to distribution
