Senior Associate Director, Counseling and Psychological Services

George Mason University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) seeks a Senior Associate Director of to work in collaboration with the Executive Director and Leadership Team in administering and leading an International Association of Counseling Services-accredited counseling center. Responsibilities:

  • Providing oversight of daily operations to achieve efficiency and effectiveness and ensure all operations are consistent with unit, division, and institutional goals;
  • Ensuring adherence and compliance with legal, ethical, and professional standards in all areas of service delivery;
  • Collaborating with unit Leadership Team members in strategic planning and implementation of identified goals and initiatives;
  • Serving as a consultant to crisis response, critical incidents, and other health and safety concerns;
  • Assisting in the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of a multidisciplinary staff;
  • Providing leadership and oversight for research initiatives and data reporting systems (e.g., utilization, accountability, outcome/impact);
  • Serving on committees that address campus safety and security (e.g., campus threat assessment team, student support team, committees related to emergency preparedness, etc.);
  • Serving as liaison to academic and nonacademic units/departments;
  • Providing direct service in clinical service/clinical consultation (daytime and after hours, to include assessment of students of concern), training, outreach, programming/community education;
  • Serving as an administrator and liaison with key campus stakeholders in the absence of the Executive Director; and
  • Having familiarity with clinical scheduling/documentation systems and providing oversight related to the technology needs of the center.

The successful candidate will possess an understanding of the following areas:

  • Contemporary professional practices in the delivery of counseling and psychological services;
  • Knowledge of ethical and legal issues related to college student mental health;
  • Multicultural competency and familiarity with needs of diverse populations;
  • Experience in crisis response, critical incident management, and clinical risk assessments;
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience in clinical settings providing psychiatric services;
  • Interest and skills in data analysis and research;
  • Experience applying and using technology to enhance delivery of programs and services; and
  • Experience with multidisciplinary teams, practices and approaches.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved;
  • Licensed as a psychologist in Virginia or eligible for licensure as a psychologist in Virginia within one year of appointment; and
  • Progressive professional experience working in a clinical and/or a counseling setting with demonstrated supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated supervisory experience for a minimum of four years in a clinical and/or counseling setting;
  • Strong consultation skills with campus and/or key stakeholders; and
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
  • Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
