The Victim Advocate/Staff Clinician is a 12-month continuing position that will provide advocacy and awareness services. At JMU, prevention services are delivered by the wellness center. In addition to advocacy and awareness, the position includes the opportunity to provide short-term individual, group and crisis counseling, after-hours coverage, consultation services and outreach programming, and training and supervision of graduate students and doctoral interns.


Responsibilities associated with this role include:

  • Maintaining an awareness of the professional literature regarding victim advocacy and awareness and working to incorporate this information into the standards and practices of the Victim Advocacy services.
  • Provide advocacy to student survivors of sexual violence, hate crime(s), and/or other interpersonal violence. Consult with faculty, staff, and other relevant individuals on student cases as needed.
  • Facilitate awareness events on campus, such as Take Back the Night.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must have a Master’s degree in a mental health related field and be licensed or license eligible as a licensed professional counselor or licensed clinical social worker in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Preference for candidate to be licensed within the Commonwealth of VA within one year.
  • Training and/or experience or interest in the provision of advocacy services.
  • Training and/or experience working with sexual assault, hate crime(s), and/or other interpersonal violence victims/survivors.
  • Training and/or experience working with college-aged population.
  • Well-developed counseling and clinical supervision skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to multicultural competency.
  • A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to high professional ideals.
  • Demonstrated skill in working well under pressure to prioritize and manage multiple complex clinical situations.
  • A collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, respect and trust towards colleagues.
  • The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships.
  • Interest and/or experience collaborating with other departments on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
