The Staff Clinician is a 12-month continuing position that provides short-term individual, group and crisis counseling, after-hours coverage, consultation services and outreach programming, and training and supervision of graduate students and doctoral interns. This position will involve the coordination of the Counseling Center’s Suicide Risk Reduction efforts.

Responsibilities associated with this role include (1) collaborating and consulting with JMU and Harrisonburg partners and Counseling Center clinicians in the assessment, provision, and coordination of services and referrals for students who struggle with suicide; (2) collaborating and consulting with JMU and Harrisonburg partners and Counseling Center clinicians in the implementation of a campus-wide policy on how to reduce suicide risk and respond to suicide loss on campus; (3) collaborating with JMU and Harrisonburg partners on developing and implementing outreach programming to increase hope, resiliency, and reduce suicide risk; and (4) managing the Program’s budget.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must have a master’s degree in counseling or social work or a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology and be licensed or license eligible as a licensed professional counselor, licensed clinical social worker, or licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Preference for candidate to be licensed within the Commonwealth of VA within one year.
  • -Previous training and/or experience in a college mental health setting, including experience providing outreach programming related to reducing the risk of suicide and/or improving college student’s mental health.
  • Interest and/or experience collaborating with other departments or offices on multidisciplinary teams.
  • The candidate should also possess well-developed counseling and clinical supervision skills, a collaborative spirit of warmth, acceptance, respect and trust towards colleagues, the energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships, a self-motivated, self-directed commitment to high professional ideals, a demonstrated commitment to multicultural competency, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
