Staff Psychotherapist – Embedded at the School of Engineering

The University of Virginia’s Department of Student Health, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), is seeking to hire a skilled and multiculturally competent, full-time mental health professional for the position of Staff Psychotherapist – Embedded in the School of Engineering. The Staff Psychotherapist – Embedded is a staff member of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and joins another CAPS staff member already housed within UVA’s School of Engineering. This position will work closely with both CAPS and School of Engineering personnel to maintain a CAPS presence at the School of Engineering.

The successful candidate will provide culturally-informed counseling services to undergraduate and graduate engineering students as well as collaborate with School of Engineering faculty, staff and administrators to provide outreach and consultation. Competitive candidates will have experience working with multicultural populations, including but not limited to first generation college students, international students, African-American/Black students, Latinx students, Asian/Asian-American students and/or LGBTQ+ students. Experience with neurodiverse populations is preferred.

Job responsibilities include providing triage, diagnostic and developmental assessments, brief psychotherapy, group therapy, and crisis services. In addition, the position involves making referrals to and coordinating care with CAPS psychiatric providers as well as facilitating referrals for students wishing to connect with psychological and psychiatric services in the community. This position may also provide supervision and didactic seminars to trainees in CAPS’ APA-accredited doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed as a mental health professional in the Commonwealth of Virginia (or license-eligible; must be licensed within six months of hire)
  • Masters in Counseling or Social Work or PhD/PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology or a related mental health field
  • At least four years of professional experience providing psychotherapy to late adolescents and/or adults
  • Knowledge and competency in culturally informed therapeutic approaches
  • Experience with brief models of psychotherapy
  • Crisis management skills, including experience with risk assessment, safety planning and hospitalization
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working on a college or university campus
  • Leading psychotherapy groups
  • Providing outreach, including experience developing presentations and speaking to diverse audiences
  • Supervising therapists-in-training
  • Experience working with neurodiverse populations (e.g., ADHD, autism spectrum, learning disorders, etc.)
