The University of Virginia’s Department of Student Health and Wellness, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking to hire an Assistant Director for Training. The Assistant Director for Training manages clinical training programs at UVA CAPS, including an advanced practicum and an APA-accredited doctoral internship in Health Services Psychology. The Assistant Director for Training also provides clinical services to UVA undergraduate and graduate students.
The Assistant Director will:
Provide individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, assessment, triage, intake assessments, and clinical consultation at 40%
Coordinate student care within a multidisciplinary setting
Serve on the CAPS Leadership Team and provide strategic thinking on training programs to support CAPS growth, change, and positioning in Student Health and Wellness, Student Affairs, and the UVA community
Engage in consultation and decision making on CAPS policies and procedures pertaining to training
Provide a creative vision for CAPS training programs that promotes the highest standard in counseling center training
Monitor overall quality of training programs including on-going evaluation of all training-related components, and ensure compliance with APA Accreditation Standards
Support training supervisors and programs as needed to ensure trainee-centered operations and outstanding counseling center training experiences
Provide outreach and consultation to University stakeholders
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology
- 3 years post-licensure experience providing psychotherapy to late adolescents and/or adults.
- A clear history of, and dedication to, providing mental health services to individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Experience supervising and providing training to doctoral trainees in an APA-accredited training program.
- Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team of treatment providers, including close collaboration/coordination of care.
- Experience in crisis intervention and facilitating transfers to a higher level of care.
- Experience with program coordination or leadership, especially within the context of clinical/counseling psychology and/or in a University Counseling Center setting
- Knowledge of policies, procedures and management of American Psychological Association Accredited clinical internship.
- Awareness of national trends pertaining to university counseling centers and university counseling center doctoral internship programs in Health Service Psychology.
- Experience leading psychotherapy groups.
Licensure: Licensed within 6 months of start date as a Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
