Reporting to, and under the guidance of, the Director of the Counseling Center, the Assistant Director of Counseling, Coordinator of Multicultural Initiatives provides a coordinated and comprehensive array of treatment services aimed at enhancing the academic, emotional, and social development of students while promoting respect for self, others, and diversity within the University community.
Essential Functions / Characteristics
- Provide individual and group counseling with students experiencing personal concerns while continuously adhering to ethical and legal standards.
- Participate in the rotation of on-call and after-hours crisis management, as assigned by the Director.
- Consult about students of concern and other matters of importance to the Counseling Center with administrators, faculty, staff, family members of students, and on and off-campus treatment providers.
- Contribute to the training and development of pre-doctoral interns and post-doctoral fellows.
- Conduct crisis appointments, intakes, post-hospitalization meetings, psychological assessments, and other specialized clinical interventions.
- Develop and implement psychoeducational outreach programs, including those requested by administrators, faculty, staff, or student organizations.
- Abide by and maintain Counseling Center and University policies and procedures.
- Continuously compose and update clinical records in a timely manner.
- Participate in and contribute to department staff meetings and case consultations.
- Coordinate or assist Counseling Center efforts in a particular domain (e.g., group dynamics, sports psychology, substance use, technology).
- Formulation and delivery of specialized consultation and outreach activities in collaboration with the Intercultural Center, international students, student organizations, and/or the Queer and Trans Resource and Advocacy Center (QTRAC).
- Strong commitment to and advancement of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts in coordination with the Counseling Center, Division of Student Life, and the University.
- Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field.
- Must hold an active Rhode Island professional license or obtain a Rhode Island professional license within 1 year of start date.
- Minimum of one year professional experience working with an adult population.
- Individual and group treatment skills with additional experience in crisis intervention and case consultation.
- Sensitivity to, and appreciation of, marginalized identities and cultural differences as well as an active commitment to practices informed by and in concert with University-wide DEI efforts.
- Ability to work extended hours and represent the Counseling Center on an infrequent basis for campus events, emergency situations, and outreach programs.
- Knowledge and experience in working with diverse populations of students and university personnel.
- Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D.) in counseling or clinical psychology.
- Experience designing and coordinating campus-wide mental health education and DEI-related programs, including the use of social media.
- One or more internship(s) and/or fellowship(s) in a higher education counseling center.
- Minimum of one year professional experience in a higher education counseling center.
