Crisis Division MOBILE TEAM composition

Mobile Crisis Team (MCT)

The MCT provides countywide coverage and operates Monday through Friday, from 10AM to 8PM. Plan for future expansion to include coverage from 7:30AM to 10PM,  Monday-Sunday.

Mobile Evaluation Team (MET)

The MET provides coverage in Oakland and operates Monday through Thursday, from 8AM to 3PM.

Crisis Services operates 7 days a week, from 7:30AM to 11:00PM; staff are expected to be available for assignments outside of the regular schedule.

Mobile Crisis Team (MCT)

This team operates with two Licensed Clinicians who respond to mental health crisis calls from the general community and providers as well as 911 mental health crisis call outs.

Mobile Evaluation Team (MET)

MET grew out of the successful partnership between BHCS and OPD through the implementation of the Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) Program.

This team pairs an Oakland Police Officer and a Licensed Clinician in an unmarked police vehicle. This team focuses on 911 generated mental health crisis calls within Oakland.

Mobile Crisis Unit
  • Available to all ages – birth to older adults regardless of insurance status
  • Emergency crisis assessment/intervention services conducted in the field
  • Early intervention before situation escalates to critical crisis point
  • Consultation services provided to consumers, housing/support systems, mental health providers, and other concerned parties
  • Assistance with linkage to outpatient mental health services
  • 5150 evaluation capacity and determination of appropriate level of care

All mobile crisis clinicians are certified to write applications for involuntary holds in Alameda County. However, clinicians will offer voluntary treatment via various diversion programs when clinically appropriate. All mobile crisis teams work in partnership with local law enforcement. The Mobile teams are a field-based response team that provides comprehensive and compassionate services to most vulnerable populations, including community members experiencing homelessness or mental illness. The mobile teams work to support community members engaged in services to pursue healthy outcomes.

Their goal is to help people in distress without traumatizing them with unnecessary hospitalizations, and to connect them to ongoing care: mental health support programs, housing, and other resources.

The POSITION

Under general direction, to provide community-based crisis intervention services for children and adult populations with mental health and/or substance abuse diagnoses on mobile crisis and mobile evaluation teams which includes direct client contact in the community, partnering with law enforcement, crisis intervention, field clinical assessments, outreach services, and other related duties as assigned. Work is performed seven days a week and assignment locations may vary in order to best serve the community.

Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Specialist (BHCIS) I/II is a flexibly-staffed class series with the work normally performed at the II level, but with initial selection possible at the I level.  BHCIS Is are expected to gain experience and demonstrate proficiency which qualifies them to promote to the BHCIS II. Upon successful completion of 12 months as a BHCIS I, the incumbent may be considered for potential flexing up to the BHCIS II based on the incumbent’s demonstrated ability to perform at the journey level position on Mobile Crisis Teams (MCT) and Mobile Evaluation Teams (MET).  Appointment at the I level will not be extended beyond 18 months.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited school in social work, marriage and family therapy, psychology, counseling, nursing, or related field; AND,

EXPERIENCE: The equivalent to two years full-time post licensure experience as a behavioral health/mental health clinician providing community based clinical and/or crisis management services.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATION: Possession of a valid clinical license from the applicable licensing authority: California Board of Behavioral Sciences, California Board of Psychology, or the California Board of Registered Nursing.

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. Applicants must possess such license prior to appointment to such positions.
