Job Description:

The Community Therapist plays a key role in furthering the Counseling and Wellness Center’s mission of increasing accessibility of mental health services with a focus on students who have been historically excluded from services or those who may not otherwise have access to mental health treatment. The Community Therapist maintains high student contact via outreach, programming, and working closely with departments on campus that support students who are experiencing problems that may affect their academic performance or other aspects of their MassArt experience. The Community Therapist provides clinical services to a small ongoing caseload.

REPORTS TO: Director, Counseling and Wellness Center
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May provide clinical supervision to graduate student trainees

SALARY: $55,000 – $65,000 for 10-month, hybrid, permanent position; commensurate with skills and experience

This position is governed by the Association of Professional Administrators (APA) Collective Bargaining Agreement. 


This is a permanent 10-month position (work 44 weeks and have 8 weeks off per year, typically in the summer)

  • Serve as a direct liaison to various campus partners such as the Justice, Equity, and Transformation office (JET); the Compass program (serving first-generation to college students); the International Education Center (IEC); and Residential Life to promote wellness initiatives as they relate to the experiences that these populations face. This includes assisting students with navigating systems (particularly within a PWI), accessing campus resources, and building a sense of community and belongingness at MassArt.
  • With a focus on social justice and equity, provide culturally informed clinical mental health services to all MassArt students. Ensure clinical services and record-keeping are in ethical and regulatory compliance.
  • Lead workshops and conversations about identity, equity, social justice, systems, and how these intersect with mental and physical health.
  • Based on level of licensure and experience, support the CWC clinical training program, which has justice and equity at the core of its developmental framework. This includes involvement with the selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of clinical trainees as well as participation in seminars, case conferences, and other meetings relevant to the training program.
  • Participation in regular CWC staff meetings, Student Development divisional meetings, and other campus-wide meetings, including search committee service.
  • CWC staff may need to assist in campus emergencies, crises, or postvention situations involving MassArt students. Although rare, CWC staff should be prepared to assist in extenuating circumstances.
  • Attend / Assist with College functions of general importance to the student body or College (e.g., Orientation, Commencement).
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.



Education: Master’s degree in social work, counseling, or related mental health field required. Licensed or license-eligible (within a maximum of 12 months) as an LICSW, LMHC, or Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 

  • Psychologist (Ph.D., Psy.D.): Currently licensed or license-eligible within 12 months of start. 
  • Social Worker (MSW):
    • Required: Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW).
    • Preferred:  Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) currently licensed or license eligible within 12 months of start.
  • Counselor (M.A., M.S.): Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC); licensed or license eligible within 12 months of start.

Experience: Two to four years of experience providing direct, clinical, mental health services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated commitment to socially just and equitable practice and a developmental training model.
  • Demonstrated skill providing clinical services for diverse clients, including international populations and clients who identify along the gender, sexual orientation, and romantic spectra.
  • Strong outreach, presentation, and consultation skills.
  • Familiarity with the issues that people from marginalized groups face as they navigate within dominant culture(s) and between cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience providing clinical services for the wide range of presenting issues seen in college students, including assessing and managing risk and the treatment of serious concerns (e.g., eating disorders, prodromal symptomatology).
  • Appreciation and knowledge of intersecting identities, the process of identity development (intersectional identity development), and how this varies between individuals.
  • Training or experience with issues such as racial fatigue, code switching, and impostor feelings.
  • Ability to manage a full caseload within a brief treatment, time-limited clinical setting.
  • Ability to manage crisis situations, including suicidality and danger to others.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds and to work in a highly collaborative manner
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with computer information systems.
  • Successful candidates will be required to meet pre-employment background screening requirements.


  • Familiarity with a variety of cultures (both international and domestic).
  • Experience living, studying, or working outside the United States.
  • Fluency in multiple languages.
  • Clinical experience working with international, immigrant, and / or refugee populations.
  • Experience in a college or university counseling center.
  • Experience navigating complex, decentralized environments. 
  • Prior experience with EMR (Titanium preferred).
  • Experience providing process group therapy.
