Hiring Range: $36.06-$38.46 per hour with excellent benefits.

Work Schedule: 11 month position, August-June. Monday-Friday, with option for some flexible scheduling. Some outreach activities and/or crisis response may require work outside of regularly scheduled hours.

General Description:

The Psychologist/ Assistant Director for Outreach provides direct and indirect mental health services to the PLU community and coordinates Proactive Care Services with various PLU departments. Additionally, the Assistant Director for Outreach continuously evaluates the mental health needs of the campus community and outreach services outcomes. This is a position focused primarily on building and engaging culturally responsive systemic support and capacity for mental health aspects of well-being at PLU. The Assistant Director provides leadership for the development of learning opportunities, resources, and collaborative engagement that contributes to individual and collective emotional well-being. This position reports to the Director for Counseling Services.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Coordination of Proactive Care Services

  • Coordinate Proactive Care Services with Plus 100, Residential Life, Athletics, Diversity Center, Academic Departments, Military and ROTC, CGE and additional service units.
  • Coordination includes assessing student wellness needs and PLU departmental evaluation of emerging mental health and wellness trends, directing content development to strategically deliver need-matched interventions; coordinating timing, scheduling and resources for psychoeducational workshops; ongoing assessment of workshop effectiveness and the overarching Proactive Care Services collaborative approach.
  • Oversee PLU Counseling Center’s social media presence including strategy and content.
  • Manage Proactive Care Services’ outreach budget.

Direct Service

  • Provide culturally and context responsive in-person (or telehealth) direct services, including mental health screening; assessment; individual counseling; groups/workshops, walk-in consultation, and crisis evaluation, triage and response.
  • Provide occasional back-up for after-hours crisis coverage.
  • Maintain ethically and legally compliant documentation of services.
  • This position provides confidential services to students under Title IX.
  • This position is a mandatory reporter of abuse/neglect of children and vulnerable adults.

Indirect Service

  • Provide indirect services (consultation, education, information, training and outreach) to the campus community and, when appropriate, family members, with corresponding documentation.
  • Participate in purposeful case management and coordination of care with CHWS, campus, LuteTelehealth, and community colleagues.
  • Depending on qualifications, serve as primary or secondary clinical supervisor for Counseling interns and contribute to the intern training program as an instructor.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and case consultations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strength in effectively working with a diverse student body and community with a particular focus on experiences for Students of Color in a historically PWI context.
  • Working knowledge of campus and community resources, in order to triage and coordinate individual care and Proactive Care Services as needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team as well as with campus community partners.
  • Experience coordinating program logistics and providing well being-focused outreach to diverse communities.
  • Assessment skills including current mental health diagnostic nosology, intake evaluation, screening for risk and crisis evaluation.
  • Experience with crisis assessment and intervention techniques.
  • Crisis response skills including familiarity with office-identified protocols (assessment and intervention), familiarity with emergency resources in the community, collaboration with other parties as needed.
  • Psychotherapy/Counseling skills including ability to develop individual treatment plans and goals and to make individual modifications as needed; capacity for warm referral to community and campus resources, and ability to create meaningful workshop/group goals and learning outcomes for group counseling.
  • Skill in maintaining confidential client records in accordance with ethical and legal guidelines.
  • Familiarity with relevant Washington State laws and code for psychologists and mental health providers and ability to exercise judgment in complex situations.
  • Skills and knowledge in ethical provision of services in a telehealth context.
  • Competency with basic computer processes including the ability to learn and use scheduling software, electronic medical record systems, and software utilized for building presentations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Active, valid professional psychologist, mental health counselor, LMFT license, or license eligible in Washington State.
  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field.
  • Successful applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience providing care in a higher education setting.

Physical Requirements:

  • Role requires sitting and using a computer, sometimes for extended periods of time.
