The William & Mary Counseling Center invites applicants for a full-time Staff Psychologist position (12 month continuing appointment). This professional will serve as part of a multidisciplinary team in providing outpatient mental health treatment to enrolled students in addition to consultation/prevention/outreach programming on campus. The Staff Psychologist will also be involved in training and supervision of Advanced Practicum Students and Psychology Interns in an APA accredited internship program.
Responsibilities include:
· Conducting triage and initial assessments leading to appropriate case conceptualization and disposition.
· Providing culturally sensitive, short-term individual clinical services to students with diverse identities and a broad spectrum of emotional, psychological, social, and academic concerns.
· Facilitating group therapy services in the form of general process groups and/or population-specific or diagnosis-based group services.
· Providing crisis intervention, emergency, and on-call services.
· Participating in the Center’s Advanced Practicum Training and in the APA accredited internship by facilitating seminars and serving as clinical supervisor for Practicum Students and/or Psychology Interns.
· Providing mental health preventive outreach programming to educate students and the university community.
· Providing collaborative care with a multidisciplinary team of mental health providers as well as with professionals within the Health & Wellness thematic area and in the Division of Student Affairs.
· Providing consultation to university faculty, staff, students, and parents/families.
· Serving as a solid team member to contribute and promote the Center’s mission and its collaborative work culture.
· Potential coordinator role based on interests, areas of expertise, and Center’s needs.
The William & Mary Counseling Center is the sole mental health unit on campus with the primary responsibility of providing a range of mental health services to students, and related support to the campus community. Our role is congruent with the mission of William & Mary, and the Division of Student Affairs, which is to prepare students to learn, lead and live with integrity and purpose. In so doing, the Counseling Center seeks to provide services that allow students to achieve their personal and educational goals. These services include the provision of mental health practices intended to reduce psychological distress, treat clinical conditions, and enhance well-being and personal growth. Our interdisciplinary team facilitates primary education and prevention activities, provides support to students experiencing normal developmental issues associated with the transition from adolescence to early adulthood, provides support for emerging, acute, and chronic clinical concerns and responds to individual student and campus-wide immediate crises. Based on clinical assessment of an individual student’s needs, we make evidence-based recommendations drawing from the resources available on campus, in the local area, and in the student’s home community when necessary. The Counseling Center actively demonstrates commitment to diversity in its broadest form and serves as an advocate for social justice in the university community and beyond. Through our multi-level training program, we dedicate ourselves to instilling these practices and values in future professionals.
A Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited academic program and internship in health service psychology are required. Qualified applicants must be licensed or licensed eligible as psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia (if not yet licensed, licensure must be achieved within a year of the date of employment). Applicants must also have demonstrated experience working with college age populations (undergraduate through graduate/professional level), excellent clinical skills (including clinical interviewing/assessment, treatment, crisis intervention, provision of on-call services), successful experience working with full range of human diversity and marginalized intersecting identities, with a demonstrated commitment to social justice, experience and skills in group therapy, demonstrated experience and skills facilitating culturally sensitive and inclusive outreach/psycho-educational programing, Student Affairs campus involvement and/or demonstrated interdisciplinary collaborative work with different offices/departments/agencies. Solid oral/written/interpersonal skills are required.
Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the requirements, have counseling center experience or an area of expertise relative collegiate mental health such as the treatment of OCD, Eating and body image issues, substance abuse treatment, DBT informed treatment; Experience in training and supervision of Psychology Doctoral trainees/interns; Group psychotherapy; Outreach and clinical services with marginalized sexual and gender communities, ethnic and/or racial student groups, international students, veterans, and/or other underrepresented student populations.
