Overview of Position

The Skidmore College Counseling Center is renewing its call for applications for two Staff Psychologist/ Social Worker positions, with a start date as soon as possible but no later than mid-August. These are both full-time, 11 month, permanent appointments. The positions involve: providing short-term therapy, including single session work; crisis intervention, including rotation in after-hours on-call coverage in support of ProtoCall; psycho-educational programming; consultation to faculty, staff, and families; leading a skills-building workshop series several times each semester; serving as a liaison to our Office of Student Diversity Programs or the Athletics Department; and participation in the Center’s multidisciplinary treatment team, as well as the larger division of Student Affairs. The successful applicants will also be involved in training the college’s Residential Life staff as well as other student leadership training.

A key responsibility of these positions is to support the success and mental well-being of students from historically marginalized and under-represented backgrounds through the provision of culturally responsive and identify-informed services. As such, candidates should have a demonstrated ability to build rapport and work successfully with diverse populations including BIPOC students, first generation students, international students, and LGBTQ+ students, and should speak to this experience directly in their cover letter and other application materials.

Primary Duties/Position Responsibilities:

  • Conducting initial assessments with new patients. Assessments include differential DSM-V diagnosis (when appropriate), substance abuse assessment, risk assessment, treatment recommendations and plan.
  • Providing single-session and ongoing individual psychotherapy appointments with students suffering from a range of difficulties, from situational and developmental concerns to more severe psychiatric illness. Such therapy will be time-limited and offered within a stepped-care service delivery model.
  • Providing crisis intervention, including same-day emergency appointments in the office (when we are no longer working remotely), after-hours on-call responsibilities, and additional clinical time as needed.
  • Conducting skill-building workshop series each semester. These focus on developing adaptive coping mechanisms related to specific mental health concerns (e.g., depression, anxiety, overwhelming emotions, etc.), are delivered in 3-week series, and each series is offered up to 4 times per semester.
  • Collaborating with the Counseling Center psychiatric consultant, our case management clinician, and with other Skidmore health professionals as needed
  • Serving in a liaison role to either the Office of Student Diversity Programs (OSDP) or the Athletics Department.
  • Providing consultation to Skidmore faculty, staff, families, and students regarding mental health issues in general, and also regarding specific students of concern, within the ethical and legal parameters of confidentiality.
  • Developing and delivering targeted educational and outreach programming related to mental health issues on campus, including: coping with stress, healthy decision-making, suicide prevention, support services available to students, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, etc.
  • Participating in Skidmore College and Student Affairs staff initiatives and committees as needed.
  • Participating in trainings with Residential Life staff, Peer Health Educators, and Peer Mentors, and creating web-based materials to inform the Skidmore community about various mental health concerns and self-help/self-care resources for addressing these.
  • Collaborating with Health Services, Health Promotion (including our SGBM victim advocates), Student Academic Services, and other campus offices providing direct student support.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Director.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates should:

  • Possess a doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology or a Master’s in Social Work
  • Have completed a supervised internship
  • Be licensed or license-eligible within one year as a psychologist or LCSW in New York State
  • Have strong diagnostic and clinical skills as well as experience in working with a broad array of psychological, emotional, and developmental concerns
  • Have experience in working with a traditional college-aged population
  • Have a demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse populations including students of color, international students, and LGBTQ+ students.
  • Expertise in providing short-term therapy and skilled risk assessment/risk management are essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with single-session therapy and/or stepped care would be a plus.
